PICS: John Legend Put’s Rwandan Fashion On The Map With This Futuristic Mushanana-Inspired Look by TangaDesigns at Move Afrika

On February 21, 2025, the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda, was set ablaze with electrifying performances as John Legend headlined the Move Afrika concert. Organized by Global Citizen in partnership with pgLang and the Rwanda Development Board, the event spotlighted African cultural industries and tackled pressing issues like youth empowerment, economic opportunities, and healthcare across the continent. But beyond the music, one element that captivated the audience was Legend’s breathtaking ensemble, crafted by none other than Rwanda’s rising fashion powerhouse, Tanga Designs.

A Tribute to Tradition, Reimagined for the Future

For this monumental performance, John Legend donned a bespoke black silk blazer with a dramatic metallic gold drape, a modern reinterpretation of Rwanda’s traditional Mushanana. The outfit, designed by Tanga Designs’ creative visionary Olivier Niyitanga, elegantly fused cultural heritage with futuristic aesthetics.

The black hard silk fabric exuded power and sophistication, while the golden metallic draping, cascading across the chest and over the shoulder, paid homage to the Mushanana’s signature sash. This dynamic fusion of structure and fluidity symbolized Rwanda’s journey—deeply rooted in tradition yet boldly embracing modernity.

Legend’s tailored blazer featured a sharp double-breasted cut, sleek lapels, and subtle embellishments on the cuffs, reinforcing a regal yet contemporary feel. The flowing gold element, made from a metal-mesh textile, shimmered under the stage lights, adding a sense of movement and grandeur.

Tanga Designs: Rwanda’s Fashion Powerhouse

The mastermind behind this masterpiece, Olivier Niyitanga, better known as Gucci Tanga, is the founder of Tanga Designs, one of Rwanda’s most influential fashion brands. Since launching in 2014, the self-taught designer has gained recognition for his ability to merge Rwandan tradition with avant-garde fashion.

At just 19 years old, Niyitanga won the Emerging Designers category at Kigali Fashion Week, setting the stage for his meteoric rise. Over the years, his creations have graced prestigious runways, and now, with John Legend donning his design on an international stage, Tanga Designs has firmly cemented its place in global fashion.

Rwanda: A Model for Africa’s Future

Beyond its vibrant cultural scene, Rwanda has emerged as a symbol of innovation, sustainability, and progress in Africa. From its commitment to green energy to its booming fashion industry, the nation has positioned itself as a hub for creativity and economic growth.

John Legend’s Mushanana-inspired ensemble was more than just a performance look—it was a testament to Rwanda’s rich history and its bright future. With designers like Tanga Designs leading the charge, Rwandan fashion is set to make an even greater impact on the global stage.

As the night ended with roaring applause, one thing was clear—Rwanda isn’t just hosting global stars; it’s shaping the future of African fashion and culture.
