Africa is Now

Jay MauMau
Africa is Now was founded by James Masai, aka the conscious Hip Hop artist Jay Mau Mau. He started in Mtonge, Kenya, by empowering the youth to stand for a creative and conscious, drug-free, non-violent environment. A political radio show, events, workshops, cooperation with health services, media, public relations and political education boosted the foundation’s impact, visibility, and reputation. Adding Austria as a connection point, Africa is Now focuses on bringing awareness to society’s struggles, radicalization, and youth impoverishment through the art of conscious Hip Hop. Sharing experiences from East Africa, the Diaspora and Austria – Africa is Now promotes a creative cultural exchange.
James Masai aka the conscious Hip Hop artist Jay MauMau is a Kenyan-born Hip Hop artist with deep roots in storytelling and activism. Growing up in Mombasa, he was inspired by his grandfather, a teacher and political thinker, which shaped his passion for representing his community. Football and freestyle rap were a big part of his childhood, but his love for Swahili literature helped him develop a unique style of wordplay and storytelling through music. Now based in Austria, Jay MauMau uses Hip Hop to share real-life experiences, blending his African roots with global influences. Collaborating with artists from Austria, Switzerland, Spain, and beyond, he proves that Hip Hop is a universal language that connects and inspires people worldwide.
